Baseline Survey of Birds and Bats, Environmental Impact Assessment and the Appropriate assessment for Wind Farm Udbina (A+B)

Project name: Baseline Survey of Birds and Bats, Environmental Impact Assessment and the Appropriate assessment for Wind Farm Udbina (A+B)

Client: Lika-Feniks Ltd.
Period: 10/2008 – 09/2013
Location: Croatia

EIS for wind farm complex Udbina of total capacity 120 MW at five locations north, west and south of Krbavsko field (Municipality Udbina, Lika- Senj County):

  1. Environmental impact study for wind farm Udbina of total capacity 120 MW – Phase A (96 MW)

The study included impact assessment for 3 locations: location 1 Pogledalo, location 2 Šalamunić and location 5 Ondić., year-round monitoring of birds and bats fauna, Screening NIA and the Appropriate Assessment.

  1. Environmental impact study for wind farm Udbina of total capacity 120 MW – Phase B (114 MW)

The study included impact assessment for 2 locations: location 3 Palež – Podlapača and location 4 Rebićka gradina – Srednja Gora, year-round monitoring of birds and bats fauna, Screening NIA and the Appropriate Assessment.

Particular aspects covered were: evaluation of present condition of the environment, assessment of impacts, and proposition of mitigation measures. The evaluation of present condition comprised of meteorology, landscape analysis, evaluation of cultural heritage and flora and fauna at proposed locations, analysis of geological and pedological conditions and analysis of forest ecosystems. It was followed by assessment of impacts on fauna, especially on ornithofauna and bats, noise impact, impacts on landscape and cultural heritage as well as other mentioned aspects. According to the findings, protection measures and monitoring program was proposed.  The EIAs were done according to the Croatian EIA legislation, which specifies requirements for the study. For the purpose of the Study, year-round monitoring of birds and bats fauna was conducted according to the Guidelines for the preparation of environmental impact studies for wind power plants. The impact assessment of the planned project on Screening NIA and the Appropriate assessment were made. Analysis of physical plans, meteorological data, current status of the environment, geological conditions, spatial distribution of noise was also included.

On the basis of collected data for assessing the possible impact of wind turbines on bats and birds space usage degree maps were made of the wider area of construction prior to construction.
