The Ionian-Adriatic Pipeline Project (IAP) comprises the construction of a new gas transmission pipeline between Split in Croatia and Fier in Albania including facilities for reverse flow and metering, MR stations and launching and receiving pigging stations. In Fier the pipeline will connect to the Trans Adriatic Pipeline, TAP, while in Split the pipeline will connect to the Croatian transmission network part of which is presently under construction.
The purpose of the FS and ESIA of the Project is to assess and define the most feasible route from Fier to Split and branch connection to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
For the territory of the Republic of Croatia the purpose of the ESIA Study was to revise already finished EIA procedures according to EBRD Performance Requirements and the EIB Statement of Environmental and Social Principles and Standards. Also, the Social Impact Assessment for the preferred route on the Croatian territory was developed.
In the territory of the Republic of Montenegro four different variants of the pipeline route were suggested at the beginning of the project, and after multi-criterial analysis, the preferred route was chosen. For the chosen variant of IAP pipeline route across the Montenegro territory, a full ESIA according to EBRD Performance Requirements and the EIB Statement of Environmental and Social Principles and Standards in Montenegro was developed.
For the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina a preliminary ESIA for the 2 branch connections was done and after detail analyses the preferred branch connection was defined.
The project consisted of Gap Analysis, Scoping phase, Stakeholder engagement phase, EIA Verification phase (Croatia), Final IAP route selection phase, Preliminary and Final ESIA phase.
Themes such as air quality, soil quality, landuse, climate conditions, biodiversity and ecological network (terrestrial and marine), noise, accidents and socioeconomic conditions were described in single reports as review of data on existing conditions, assessments of possible impacts from construction, operation and decommission phases of intervention and also as mitigation measures. Documents such as the Environmental and Social Action Plan and the Environmental and Social Management and Monitoring Plan were enclosed.
Complex and detailed maps comprising harmonisations of different geographical zones for each country, and other graphics for the whole IAP route were developed at all project phases.
