On July 11th and 12th, 2017, a workshop was held in Cappadocia, Turkey, as part of the Natura 2000 project in Turkey (Strengthening the National Nature Protection System for the Implementation of Natura 2000), where Oikon participated as Project Partner.
Oikon’s team, besides preparing the Natura 2000 site information system and harmonizing it with the existing biodiversity database, also participates in the methodology development phase for selecting the potential Natura 2000 sites (the integration of the Natura 2000 procedures with the SCP – Systematic Conservation Planning Criteria, the definition of the ecoregion boundary that ensures ecological integrity; determination of biodiversity spatial data).
Considering that Oikon has worked on a variety of projects in the area of environmental protection, nature protection and natural resource management (forestry, hunting, agriculture), it was especially the maps (Ecological Network, Emerald Network, Corine Land Cover, …), i.e. the spatial-thematic results of these projects that contributed to the successful establishment of Natura 2000 sites in Croatia. As part of the case study, the experience of the Natura 2000 implementation in Croatia was presented by Vladimir Kušan, PhD., on an example of forest areas that entered the Natura 2000 network.
Acknowledgment of the successful establishment of Natura 2000 in Croatia was given at the same workshop in Cappadocia, in the presentation of Laura-Patricia Gavilán, Musee National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris, who was the EU Evaluator for Natura 2000 in Croatia at the time: „…EU accession countries from the Baltic states and from Central Europe have largely benefited from pilot projects under Emerald before their entry in the EU in 2004. Croatia was fully prepared for implementing Natura 2000, in 2014, after being actively involved in the Emerald process“.
We really felt proud. 🙂
