Restoration project in the Odransko Polje protected area

Project name: Restoration project in the Odransko Polje protected area

Client: Public Institution for Management of Protected Areas of Sisak-Moslavina County

Duration: 01/2025 – 7/2025
Location: Croatia

In the period from January 10, 2025 to July 31, 2025, within the protected area and the Natura 2000 ecological network site HR2000415 Odransko polje in Sisak-Moslavina County, a restoration project for the oxbow lake Berek was carried out. The project included the collection and analysis of existing data, field surveys, definition of restoration zones, planning of desilting and bank rehabilitation, as well as the plan for removal of invasive alien species and waste. The result of the project is a restoration plan document for the Berek oxbow lake, aimed at preserving the target habitat types (3150 and 3130) and their associated species.

Implemented Activities

Planning, collection of existing materials, and data analysis

  • Collected and analysed data on target habitat types, particularly natural eutrophic waters with vegetation of the Hydrocharition or Magnopotamion type (3150) and amphibian communities of Isoëto-Nanojuncetea (3130), as well as on other target species and habitats for which the Berek oxbow lake is an important site.
  • Collected and analysed hydrological and hydromorphological data.
  • Collected and analysed historical data (historical topographic maps).
  • Reviewed experience and best practices related to silt and invasive alien species removal.
  • Analysis of the geodetic base map.
  • Organised a meeting with the Client.

Preparation of the restoration project

  • Conducted an analysis of local target species and target habitat types, ecological conditions that should be preserved or achieved are defined
  • Identified locations in favourable condition that are important to preserve.
  • Identified areas in advanced shrub succession stages with a high presence of invasive alien plant species, as well as areas with significant amounts of dumped waste and construction debris.
  • Conducted two additional field surveys to collect information on accessibility to the water body and potential areas needed for the implementation of restoration activities (locations for sludge and machinery placement, etc.), and to verify the presence of the target species Marsilea quadrifolia (four-leaf water clover) and further determine the distribution of habitat types 3130 and 3150, as well as invasive alien plant species.

Results

  • A proposal for bank rehabilitation and restoration of degraded zones was developed, along with the identification of areas suitable for the recovery of amphibian habitats.
  • A channel restoration plan was prepared, defining desilting zones to achieve an optimal water depth even during dry months, along with a plan for sludge deposition within the Berek area.
  • A mechanical removal plan for invasive alien species was prepared, defining zones where removal will be implemented, as well as a plan for partial removal of dumped waste in the marginal areas surrounding the oxbow lake.
