Project name: Birds and bats monitoring for WF Senožečka brda and Zajčica
Client: Amicus Ltd. and Vepa Ltd.
Period: 09/2021 – 12/2024
Location: Slovenia
Pre-construction bird monitoring field activities for the Senožečka brda and Zajčica wind farms were conducted from September 2021 to September 2022.
The following activities were carried out as part of bird monitoring:
- observation from fixed observation points (vantage point)
- monitoring of songbirds in areas around planned WTGs on a point transect (Point Count)
- search of the nocturnally active species (Strigiformes and Caprimulgus europaeus) presence
- search of raptors potential nests from fixed points (Vantage Point)
- search of woodpeckers (Picidae) presence
- search of wood grouse (Tetraoninae) presence
- search of corncrake (Crex crex) presence
- preparation of field reports
- processing and analysis of results
- communication and consultations with the client
- preparation of a final report for the Senožečka brda and Zajčica wind farms
The bird fauna was monitored by observing flights from fixed observation points (Vantage point), visually searching for nests of raptors, researching the songbird community using the point transect method, sound decoys/ by listening to nocturnally active species, looking for traces and medicines of grouse and luring woodpeckers and woodpeckers, and listening to the calls of corncrake in open areas. Overflights of species sensitive to collision with wind turbines were analyzed in a GIS environment. The density of nesting pairs and the number of pairs of nocturnally active species were calculated. The monitoring methodology, results and analyzes are presented in the final reports for the VE Senožečka brda and Zajčica.
Field activities for pre-construction bat fauna monitoring for wind farms Senožečka brda and Zajčica were conducted from November 2021 to December 2022.
The following activities were performed as part of bat monitoring:
- roost site surveys
- periodic bat call recording along transect routes
- continuous bat call recording at stationary points
- mission report preparation
- data processing and analysis
- communication and consultation with the client
- final report on bat fauna for Senožečka Brda Wind Farm and final report on bat fauna for Zajčica Wind Farm.
Bat fauna was monitored by recording bat calls at stationary points and along transect routes to assess activity levels and by surveying nearby potential roosting sites. Bat call recordings were analyzed using BatExplorer software and relevant literature. Bat activity was analyzed temporally and spatially within a GIS environment to create a map of presumed space use degree (SUD).
