March 20, 2023 – CLC+ Backbone is the largest European land cover monitoring project tendered by the EEA, worth as much as 10 million euros, in which Oikon participated as part of a pan-European team of experts.
The CLC+ package of products and applications is a new generation of the CORINE Land Cover System, consisting of several components. CLC+ Backbone is a geospatial data component comprising two main products based on Sentinel satellite imagery for the reference years 2017, 2018 and 2019: a 10-meter raster layer with 11 classes and a vector layer with a minimum mapping unit of 0.5 ha with 18 land cover classes for the whole EEA39.
Within the project, Oikon was involved in the collection, processing and validation of data for the territory of 8 countries in the region.
The CLC+ Backbone land cover raster for 2018 has been published by the European Environment Agency (EEA) and is now available on the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service portal.
This unique product will enable the fulfilment of many current and future needs in monitoring and reporting on the state of land cover/use in the EU and will be a key element in the monitoring of the European Green Deal, strengthening the EU’s position as a global leader in addressing climate change.
