Interreg Project “ENVIRO – Experiencing Sustainable Tourism to Inspire Cross-Border Changes” Launched

Brežice, Slovenia, October 22, 2024 – We participated in the kick-off meeting of the cross-border project between Croatia and Slovenia, titled “ENVIRO – Experiencing Sustainable Tourism to Inspire Cross-Border Changes.” The meeting was successful, and we look forward to working on this significant and exciting project, which will contribute to sustainable development and bring long-term benefits to local communities on both sides of the border.

The ENVIRO project emphasizes ongoing intercultural cross-border cooperation and develops an attractive tourism product based on the innovative triple paradigm of Tourism-Environment-Energy. Through this project, together with our partners, we will implement cross-border strategies in the areas of climate action and energy transition, sustainable development, responsible environmental and natural resource management, as well as education, tourism, and networking.

As part of the project, interconnected interpretation centres will be established on both the Slovenian (in Brežice) and Croatian (in Zaprešić) sides, offering new educational and promotional content and programs tailored for people with disabilities.

Oikon will be involved in organizing interactive, practical workshops for younger generations, focusing on the importance of environmental protection. We will also prepare professional development programs for elementary and high school teachers to enrich their curricula and enhance their approaches, making it easier to inspire and educate students on the importance of environmental protection. Additionally, we will share our knowledge of nature and environmental conservation with the wider community and prepare ecological content for both interpretation centres in Zaprešić and Brežice.

Alongside Oikon, the project’s partners include the Municipality of Brežice (lead partner), the Tourist Board of the City of Zaprešić, the Institute for Entrepreneurship, Tourism, and Youth Brežice, and the Faculty of Energy Technology at the University of Maribor.

The project began in September 2024 and will last for 30 months. Its total value exceeds 1.5 million euros, with 80% of the funding provided by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
