Oikon at ESA’s Living Planet Symposium 2025

June 27, 2025 – Oikon’s team of remote sensing experts attended the ESA Living Planet Symposium 2025, held in Vienna, Austria, from 23 to 27 June. Under the theme “From Observation to Climate Action and Sustainability for Earth”, this global event highlighted the growing importance of satellite-based Earth observation in tackling environmental challenges.

As one of the world’s leading conferences in this field, the symposium brought together over 6,500 scientists, institutions, industry representatives, and decision-makers from 119 countries to share the latest findings, innovations, and applications of satellite data.

Oikon stood out as one of the top contributors, presenting the following expert work that attracted strong interest from participants:

  • “Earth Observation for Advanced Marine Habitat Mapping”, presented by Oikon CTO Branimir Radun, showcased Oikon’s extensive work using EO data to develop the national map of marine habitats of the Republic of Croatia.
  • “Monitoring of Infralittoral and Coastal Marine Habitats and Ecosystems”, also presented by Branimir Radun, highlighted approaches to long-term monitoring and assessment of marine biodiversity using remote sensing techniques.
  • “Capabilities and Limitations of Sentinel-2 for Monitoring Invasive Plants”, presented by dr. Ivan Tekić, Head of Scientific Council at Oikon, focused on the potential and limitations of current satellite missions in addressing biodiversity threats, based on a case study of ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) and false indigo bush (Amorpha fruticosa).
  • “Automated Monitoring of Anthropogenic Coastal Changes Using Sentinel-2 Imagery and Machine Learning Techniques”, a poster presented by doc. dr. sc. Ivan Tomljenović, Head of Oikon Institute, highlighted innovative uses of AI for detecting and monitoring coastal changes driven by human activity.

In addition to his presentations, Branimir Radun also took part in a panel discussion during the session “Multiple Stressors on Ocean Health and Marine Biodiversity: Lessons Learned and Path Forward.”

Oikon’s participation reflects its ongoing commitment to applying cutting-edge technology in environmental protection and sustainability. By actively engaging with global experts and staying at the forefront of Earth observation, Oikon continues to expand its impact in climate and nature-based solutions.

Held every three years, ESA’s Living Planet Symposia serve as vital platforms for collaboration between science, business, policy, and society, driving forward the use of satellite data for a more sustainable future.
