Oikon signs a third contract with European Space Agency (ESA)

June 10, 2022 – After signing two contracts with the European Space Agency (ESA) late last year, Oikon has now signed a third remote sensing contract with the Agency. The project, called “Sentinel-based infralittoral sea habitat type mapping” will use Sentinel imagery to map infralittoral marine habitat.

The infralittoral habitat type represents a living part of a vegetated zone in the sea. It is usually characterised by lush vegetation and a variety of animal species. In the Adriatic Sea, it covers an area from 0-40 m in depth and has a total area of about 33962 km². At this level, the biomass of algae and marine flowering plants usually exceeds the biomass of fauna. Due to its indented shape, the Croatian coast accounts for 71% of the total length of the land border and has one of the most extensive coastal indentedness indices in Europe.

Mapping and monitoring marine habitats are one of the key elements for marine conservation and sustainable development. Marine ecosystems are among the most productive and diverse ecosystems and are one of the few that are directly linked to Goals 14 and 15 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, so their importance is clear.

The project will contribute well as a basis for government activities related to medium- and long-term plans for marine habitat management and related legislation, which is directly related to the further use and development of ESA activities and the development of sustainable space business. This and two other ESA projects we are working on will serve the long-term goal of preserving the environment and enabling rapid action to protect its values and our habitats.
