December 18, 2024 – We are thrilled to announce that Oikon’s team won first place at this year’s WEkEO Hackathon 2024 with their project Agroforeo. The competition, which brought together 49 teams from around the globe, took place from December 12 to 14. Oikon’s team, comprising Nela Jantol, Ivan Tekić, Luka Raspović, and Bruno Ćaleta, impressed the judges with their innovative solution and presentation.

Agroforeo is an innovative tool designed to facilitate the transition from traditional monoculture farming to sustainable agroforestry systems, which combine the cultivation of woody plants with crops and/or livestock on the same land. This approach enhances climate change resilience, mitigates the impacts of droughts, floods, and soil erosion, and supports carbon sequestration, contributing to a resilient and sustainable agricultural future. The tool is especially relevant considering the EU Nature Restoration Law, which requires countries to integrate agricultural transition strategies into their National Restoration Plans.
Using data from real agroforestry systems across Europe, Agroforeo leverages the WEkEO platform and machine learning models to analyse key ecological factors. The results include a suitability map for agroforestry across the EU and detailed recommendations for individual agricultural plots through an interactive map. A prototype developed in Jupyter Notebook serves as the foundation for a future web application, enabling users to easily obtain tailored recommendations for successful agroforestry system implementation by selecting their plot.

We proudly congratulate our winning team on their achievement and wish them continued success in future challenges and projects.
