The goal of the project was to analyse the product carbon footprint (PCF). The analysis covered three types of soda produced and sold by Şişecam Soda Lukavac: dense soda ash, light soda ash, and sodium bicarbonate (technical and additive grades: feed and food). It was conducted in accordance with internationally recognised standards (ISO 14067:2018 and the GHG Protocol Product Standard) and aligned with best practices for quantifying product-related greenhouse gas emissions.
The project included a site visit to the Lukavac production facility and a detailed mapping and review of all segments of the production process. The manufacturing process for all soda types and the production units involved were described in detail. System boundaries were defined as cradle-to-gate, meaning that all upstream processes related to the supply of raw materials and fuels, in-house operations within the plant, and indirect emissions associated with purchased electricity were included.
Key sources of greenhouse gas emissions were identified, and data were collected on input materials and energy carriers required for production. Greenhouse gas emissions were calculated, and emissions were allocated for each of the three soda types. Recommendations were developed for improving data monitoring, along with sensitivity analyses for selected input parameters and a statistical uncertainty analysis.
A detailed assessment of alternative energy sources and fuels was also prepared, including potential savings and their impact on the overall carbon footprint of soda production. Considered options included the switch from coal to natural gas for heat generation, replacement of coal with liquid fuels such as gas oil and fuel oil, and electrification of thermal energy production through the use of electric boilers and industrial heat pumps.
Additionally, based on the calculated greenhouse gas emissions, an illustrative estimate was made of the cost Şişecam Soda Lukavac would incur for its emissions if Bosnia and Herzegovina were included in the EU ETS system.
