Research and analysis of plant biodiversity on the island of Krk within the project “FoRESisT (SIHR00099), Interreg SI-HR 2021–2027”

Project name: Technical assistance service for the research and analysis of plant biodiversity on selected grassland plots on the island of Krk within the project “FoRESisT (SIHR00099), Interreg SI-HR 2021–2027”

Client: Dubašnica Ltd.

Period: 04/2025 – 7/2025
Location: Island of Krk, Croatia

This project aimed to investigate and assess the natural value of semi-natural grasslands in the areas of Gradina and Donji Drmun on the island of Krk, shaped by extensive agricultural activities. The analysis was conducted to identify sites with preserved ecological potential and to develop guidelines for their future management, including opportunities for pilot restoration projects.

The research was based on the standardised phytosociological method using extended Braun-Blanquet vegetation relevés. Fieldwork was carried out across eight sites within two larger units (Donji Drmun and Gradina), selected based on prior knowledge and their relevance for the conservation of grassland ecosystems.

Based on the results, site-specific management and restoration guidelines were proposed, with activities prioritised according to urgency and conservation value. As part of the project, four pilot project ideas were developed, aimed at maintaining semi-natural grasslands in favourable ecological conditions. These would involve the local community and include educational activities designed to engage the interested public and schoolchildren.

In conclusion, the project successfully identified spatial locations for conservation action, elaborated grassland restoration approaches, and proposed steps for linking the natural and cultural values of Krk’s grassland habitats with local identity and sustainable development.

Implementation of this Project contributes to the following Sustainable Development Goals:
