Study of Framework Possibilities for the electrification of railways Oštarije – Knin – Split, Knin – Zadar and Perković – Šibenik

Project name: Study of Framework Possibilities for the electrification of railways Oštarije – Knin – Split, Knin – Zadar and Perković – Šibenik

Client: HŽ Infrastructure Ltd.
Period: 03/2014– 05/2015
Funding: State Budget
Location: Croatia

The railway line on section Oštarije – Knin – Split (M604), Knin – Zadar (M606) and Perković – Šibenik (M607) are categorized as international connecting lines on the branch of the corridor RH2 (border Botovo – Koprivnica – Zagreb – Rijeka – former V.b. Pan-European transport corridor) and on the corridor RH1 (border – Savski Marof – Zagreb – Vinkovci – Tovarnik – border – former X. Pan-European transport corridors)

The main objective of the Study of framework possibilities was to examine general possibilities for electrification and reconstruction of existing railway line on section Oštarije – Knin – Split, Knin – Zadar and Perković – Šibenik. The justification for the electrification of the lines is to be determined from the aspect of HŽ infrastructure (financial analysis), but also from the socio-economic aspect (economic analysis).

Study of framework possibilities for the electrification of railways Oštarije – Knin – Split, Knin – Zadar and Perković – Šibenik comprised of several following studies:  Technical preliminary design of fixed installations of electric traction, preliminary environmental impact assessment, preliminary study of financial and economic assessment of the electrification of railway and as well as pre-feasibility study. Oikon Ltd. was the official contractor responsible for Preliminary Environmental Impact Analysis (PEIA) study.

The PEIA study covered evaluation of the current state of the environment and preliminary assessment of possible environmental impacts. This included analysis of physical planning documentation, impacts on landuse in settlements and local population, analysis of impacts on hydrogeology and waters, forest ecosystems, soil and agriculture, game and hunting, biodiversity (flora, fauna, nature protected areas and ecological network), landscape, cultural heritage, air quality and waste. Preliminary assessment of social impacts was also given. According to foreseen or calculated significant impacts, environmental management plan with proposition of specific mitigation measures and monitoring plan was suggested.

Services provided:

  • Analysis of the current state of the environment (geology/hydrogeology, soil and agriculture, forestry and forest ecosystems, game and hunting, biodiversity (flora, fauna, habitats, protected areas, ecological network), landscape, cultural heritage, air quality, existing noise and vibrations levels, electromagnetic fields)
  • Preliminary EIA on previously stated features of biophysical environment as well as assessment of social impacts
