Green Infrastructure Strategy of the City of Zagreb

Project name: Green Infrastructure Strategy of the City of Zagreb

Client: City of Zagreb
Period: 09/2016 – 06/2019
Location: Croatia

The goal of the Green Infrastructure Strategy of the City of Zagreb was to stop the loss of green areas and biodiversity, preserve and increase biodiversity in urban ecosystems, strengthen ecosystem functions, sustainable management and use of protected parts of nature, including areas of the Natura 2000 ecological network.

We made an analysis of the current state of space of the City of Zagreb, with an emphasis on natural and cultural features, as well as various spatial analyzes in the GIS environment, including green infrastructure. Based on remote sensing (analysis of satellite images), an analysis of thermal islands was made and a map of the area with a higher temperature was made. Areas with a higher total surface temperature and the need for the inclusion of more green infrastructure elements have been identified. A habitat fragmentation analysis was also made and the main directions for connecting the green infrastructure of the City of Zagreb were identified. In addition, an analysis of stakeholders who should be involved in the implementation of the strategy and the establishment and maintenance of the green infrastructure of the City was conducted.

During the development of the Strategy, seven working meetings (workshops) were held with the Working Group for the Development of Green Infrastructure of the City of Zagreb, where a SWOT analysis was developed, and vision, strategic and specific goals were defined, which will be further elaborated later through the Action Plan. In addition, workshops were organized and held with involved stakeholders.
