May 10, 2021 – Oikon was the sponsor of the 2nd STEM Games, an international competition for STEM students, held online from 6 to 8 May under the name STEM Games Safe Mode. The general theme of the competition was Dare to Adapt, to emphasize the importance of adaptation and interdisciplinarity in combating the pandemic.
This year’s STEM Games brought together more than 100 participating students from Croatia and abroad who showed their ingenuity and creativity by solving tasks from the STEM area related to the current situation with the pandemic. For example, they constructed a phylogenetic tree, troubleshot robots handling samples for Covid-19 testing, dealt with credit risks during a pandemic, and investigated the effects of a pandemic on the environment.
Professor Tarzan Legović, was one of the mentors at the competition and he prepared a very interesting assignment related to Covid-19 and nature protection. The participating student teams needed to calculate the probability of SARS-CoV-2 passing directly from a human to at least one short-toed snake eagle (Circaetus gallicus) within a year. Top three teams to solve the assignment were: Chupapi Muñaños from Sarajevo, MATHOS from Osijek and 150-300 from Rijeka.
“Just as in the STEM Games, at OIKON teams work together to achieve harmony between people and nature,” said prof. Legović, congratulating the winners of both Oikon’s assignment and the Games.
We are looking forward to next year and the new STEM Games. 🙂
