Zagrebačka pivovara Sustainability Report 2023 – Multidisciplinary Approach and Application of Sustainability Standards

December 23, 2024 – We have successfully prepared a new sustainability report for Zagrebačka pivovara. This report marks an important step towards compliance with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), whereby Zagrebačka pivovara responded promptly to the requirements of the new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

After we prepared the reports for 2021 and 2022 in accordance with the GRI standards, this year’s report for 2023 is aligned, to the greatest extent possible, with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). The process of creating this report included several key elements that ensure the quality and relevance of the content:

  • A complete value chain analysis, with a special emphasis on the upstream part due to its significant dependence on natural resources, such as water and agricultural raw materials.
  • A double materiality assessment, which provides a comprehensive insight into the actual and potential impacts on the environment and society, as well as the risks associated with business, especially those related to dependence on natural resources.
  • Inclusion of nature as a “silent stakeholder”, a new approach to the European sustainability standard that gives nature a “voice” with the help of scientific and professional literature, thus ensuring analytical precision and relevance of reporting.

The importance of multidisciplinarity in this process is further emphasized by the involvement of experts such as Mr. sc. Zlatko Pletikapić, whose analyses have enabled a deeper understanding of the connection between Zagrebačka pivovara’s business activities, environmental risks, and financial consequences in the medium and long term. It has also contributed to adapting the ESRS methodology to the specificities of the brewing industry, particularly concerning water resource management.

The report provides a clear picture of how science-based methodology and a comprehensive approach enable companies to better understand their own impacts and opportunities. This lays the foundations for effective risk management, strategy adaptation, and the identification of new business opportunities.

Additional information:

Impact of climate change on the brewing industry:

  1. Impact on raw materials: Climate change is already having a negative impact on the quantity and quality of key raw materials for beer production. The impact of climate change on hops, with disastrous yields in 2022 and no signs of improvement, is particularly highlighted.
  2. Searching for solutions: Brewers, hop growers, maltsters, and research institutes are actively looking for solutions to mitigate the impact and sustain brewing. Cooperation with producers of raw materials and the adoption of more sustainable agricultural practices are actively encouraged.
  3. Reducing carbon footprint: Brewers are actively reducing their carbon footprint through the use of renewable energy sources and improvements in energy efficiency. However, the introduction of new technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is a challenge due to high initial investments and complex integration into existing processes.
  4. Water scarcity: Certain regions are facing water scarcity, which requires significant effort to ensure sustainable water use.
